Pork

  • Easy Kalua Pig
Do you want the taste of a kalua pig from a luau, but dont have the time to dig a pit or even get all the neccessary items to do so the authentic way? This is a great way to make the kalua pig that will taste just like that without all the time.

Ingredients:

3 lb. pork roast ( bone in)

2 table spoons hawaiian salt or rock salt

liquid smoke seasoning

heavy duty aluminum foil ( the big sheets)

Preparation:

Preheat oven to 350 degrees

Using the foil, create a bowl like shape to fit the pork, giving enough room for the pork to have some space between as well as able to wrap and fold edges on the top. Score the pork, place in the foil. Add 10-15 drops of liquid smoke and about 1/4 cup of water or chicken stock. Sprinkle hwaiian salt or rock salt over the pork, not all of it just enough to coat, you can always add later if needed. Fold the edges together, making a tight seal. Take another layer of foil and wrap again, this just creates an even slower cokking method for the heat.

Now you are ready

Cooking:

Place pork in middle rack, may want to put a baking sheet on bottom rack, incase of drips that leak out. Bake for about 3-4 hrs, take out, carefully unwrap the top, keeping the foil in tact. Check to see if the pork shreads off the bone, if still chunky, recover and cook longer. Cook till the meat just shreads like a pulled pork for barbecue. Taste to see if needs more salt or liquid smoke, adding water if it dried up.

So if you have a craving for hawaiian kalua pig and dont have the time or neccessary items, such as ti leaves, banana leaves, and a space for a dug pit, this is the easiest way to get the taste and the flavor of it.
